Start with ecosystem depth
Google's Devpost customer story says Google has run more than 25 hackathons on Devpost since 2019, reaching over 160,000 developers across 172 countries. That matters because large ecosystems tend to have clearer sponsor tracks, public galleries, and repeatable judging ops.
Scale alone does not make an event good for you. It does make the event easier to research. If a host has public rules, past winners, and source pages, you can judge the weekend before you spend it.
Compare prize size with crowd size
The same Google story says Gemini 3 Hackathon had more than 35,000 developers and a $100,000 prize pool. That is a strong signal for prestige and competition at the same time.
Big prizes attract strong teams. If you join, do it because your idea fits the prompt, not because the pool looks large. A generic wrapper will drown in a field that big.
Agent tracks need exact stack fit
Google Cloud Rapid Agent Hackathon offered $60,000 across six partner prize pools. The event required a functional AI agent powered by Gemini and Google Cloud Agent Builder, plus one partner MCP server.
That is not a generic AI hackathon. It rewards teams that can wire hosted agents, partner APIs, a public repo, a hosted URL, and a short demo video without losing the plot. If you hate the required stack, skip it.
Format changes the kind of team you need
AWS AI Agent Global Hackathon ran from September 8 to October 20, 2025, with $45,000+ in prizes and winners announced at AWS re:Invent 2025. AgentHacks 2025 was a 2-day applied research workshop for 300+ hackers, researchers, founders, and students.
Those are different games. Long online windows reward planning, docs, and async execution. Short in-person formats reward fast scoping, working demos, and a team that can make decisions without meetings.
Use a five-part scorecard
Score each event on prompt fit, required tools, public judging criteria, submission burden, and sponsor credibility. AI ATL 2025 is a good example of a source page with visible sponsor tracks across Google Cloud, Microsoft for Startups, Solana, Gemini API, Vultr, Snowflake, ElevenLabs, MongoDB, and .Tech.
The right event is the one where your demo path is obvious after reading the rules. If you need three days just to understand the sponsor ask, you are already behind.
